Petitions on the Longer Day

Many parents at individual schools are beginning to circulate petitions and present them to the Board of education in an effort to preserve what they feel is working well in their schools. We are sharing these petitions and letters as examples of what parents at these schools are doing on the longer day issue. While we don't think there is any consensus on the exact length that the day should be, we at RYH know that there is a strong consensus on the issues of quality and funding, and we will continue to advocate for better programs and increased resources to our children's classrooms both for this fall and ongoing.

Below are some examples of petitions and letters:

Drummond LSC Letter to the Board of Ed

North-Side College Prep Parent Petition

Whitney Young Parent Petition

Sutherland Elementary Parent Petition

Grimes Fleming Parent Petition

Taft High School

*If you would like us to add other parent-initiated petitions, please send the link with school name to info@ILRaiseYourHand.org.

Other parent led grass-roots groups are circulating petitions relating to the length of the day specifically. These are parent-led petitions we are currently aware of:

6.5 to Thrive petition

Beverly Parents: Say no to the CPS Proposed 7.5 Hour Day

We maintain that it is crucial to advocate for what is best for your child. Speaking up and being engaged is critical in improving public education in Chicago. Whether you have a preference regarding the length of day or its curricular contents, including art, music, core subjects or PE, it is always important to express parental concerns at the school, district and city levels.
