RYH Newsletter | 3.8.2019

The window for the IL Assessment of Readiness (IAR) opens Monday, March 11. Use this weekend to review our 2019 Toolkit for Standardized Testing and Opt Out to learn more about this “new” assessment and how you can #ChooseToRefuse #ZombiePARCC! 🧟 The three main resources are now translated into Spanish: Q & A, Notification Letter of Refusal (scroll to p. 2), and Refusal Cards- all three can be found in the Toolkit.

RYH Delivers CPS Nursing Report to Board Of Ed

At the February unelected CPS Board of Education meeting, RYH delivered a 12 page parent research report entitled Improving Nursing Care in Chicago Public Schools: Creative and Meaningful Solutions Left on the Table. You can find the report here. Starting in 2018, the RYH Nursing Group attended meetings with CPS, spoke at various Board of Ed meetings, shared their experiences & stories, and researched possible solutions employed by other districts.

The Improving Nursing Care in CPS report summarizes the meetings and itemizes parent concerns as well as recommendations. You can find videos of our speakers plus a fourth video of CPS board members and Central Office staff discussing the report and parent nursing concerns here.

We are super grateful to our RYH Nursing Group! We really appreciate their work in producing this report and we look forward to continuing to work with them by continuing to push CPS to make the real changes needed. Thank you, Susan Agrawal, Crystal Arellano, Amber Cesna, Emma Coates, Catherine Diedrich, Laurel Henson, Mary Fahey Hughes, Wendy Katten, Merrick O’Connell, Carmen Salas, Nicole Seidlitz, Danica Uzelac, and Myra Young!

More from the CPS Board of Ed Meeting

You can read the prepared statements from RYH speakers here. Three RYH parents delivered the Improving Nursing Care report and explained the need for a complete overhaul of the CPS nursing design system. The fourth prepared statement includes several questions from RYH on various CPS issues such as the ARA meetings, an overhaul of SQRP which hasn't involved parents, and implementation of a new IL CPS facilities law. Here’s our thread of live Tweets from the meeting. Below is some press coverage.

It has been nine months since the ISBE public inquiry into CPS special education found that CPS delayed, denied, and withheld services to students with disabilities- and this continues.
